Tips for Getting the Most Out of Advising and Registration
Please schedule an appointment ahead of time. Making an appointment will guarantee that you will get to speak to someone at the time of your arrival.
If you have questions for your advisor write them down and bring them with you to your appointment so that you can go over them.
If you are considering changing your major, transferring, or withdrawing you should mention this to your advisor during your advisement session.
You may want to discuss any problems you are having that could affect your performance in school. Your advisor may be able to help.
Think about how many hours you would like to take this semester. Remember you have to take 12 hours to be considered full time.
Look over the semester schedule and be thinking about the courses you might like to take. If you find some you like write them down, including the CRNs, and bring them with you. It is also a good idea to make an alternate schedule in case some of the classes are full.
Be sure to check the DSC catalog and see if the courses you want to take have prerequisites. If they do have prerequisites, you fulfilled them?
You should also make sure that the classes you want to sign up for will count toward your degree. Taking classes that are not part of your degree could affect your financial aid if you have it.
Last but not least be on time. Often, the advisors have appointments scheduled both before and after your appointment. Arriving late may mean that you won’t have enough time to complete everything in your advising session.
