Meet the Peer Leaders |

Peer Instruction encompasses many different aspects of learning for students. At Dalton State, our Peer Leaders co-instruct First Year Experience Seminar 1000 (FYES1000) classes. These Peer Leaders also facilitate study groups in Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions. And they work as individual tutors.

FYES1000 Student Interns

FYES student interns help instructors teach First Year Experience Seminar classes. In FYES classes, interns serve as mentors for the 25 or so first-time students who are enrolled in each class. They provide assistance to the instructor by teaching some of the lessons, creating meaningful assignments, and meeting with students individually to help them transition into the Dalton State College community.

Supplemental Instruction (SI)

What is SI?

Supplemental Instruction is a one-hour peer-facilitated study period attached to a “killer course.” A “killer course” is one that is notorious for its high drop, failure, and withdrawal rates. SI Leaders meet weekly with students enrolled in their assigned class to engage the students in collaborative exercises. With the aid of supplemental instruction, students learn not only how to study for the class, but also how to retain and apply the information covered in the classes.

When do Supplemental Instruction (SI) classes begin?

On the first day of class, students fill out a class schedule with their SI Leader. The leader then sets up three to four review sessions per week based upon the best time schedules of the majority of the students in the class. Then it’s up to the student to show up during one of those available times.

What is in it for the students?

Attendance is voluntary; however, those who attend SI sessions regularly tend to make higher grades and perform better in class. Students have the opportunity to compare notes, discuss important concepts, develop strategies for studying the subject, and “test” one another before the professor does. The study skills acquired in SI sessions often help students perform better in other classes as well.

How do I know if my classes have Supplemental Instruction sessions?

If you’d like to know which classes have SI sessions, come by the Academic Resource Center located in the lower level of the Pope Student Center. Jody Trost, Coordinator of First Year Experience and Peer Tutoring, and other staff members will be able to assist you.

Tutoring

Individual tutoring can help students master challenging subject matter at their own pace and according to their own specific needs. Those who feel that they need an individual tutor should come by the Academic Resource Center. All individual tutoring is by appointment only.
