B. J. Bandy (1888-1948), for whom the College gymnasium is named, was one of the early
leaders in the tufting industry and eventually built the largest tufted bedspread plant in the nation
at Cartersville, GA. By the 30's, he was the leading figure in the textile industry in Georgia. When
the Tufted Textile Manufacturers Association was founded in 1945, he was unanimously nominated
for its president.
Bandy was a pioneer in the tufted bedspread industry and a major force in its development. The
Bandy family has been generous with its philanthropy, having donated the intensive care unit
to the Hamilton Memorial Hospital, restored the Chief Vann House, and supported numerous
local charities.
