The Internal Revenue Service requires
that Dalton State College report, on a
1098T form, qualified tuition and
related expenses (required fees). In
addition, the amount of scholarships and
grants is also reported.
The 1098T is an information return. It's
purpose is to assist you in computing
certain education tax credits or
deductions for which you may be
eligible. For tax information, please
visit the IRS website - www.irs.gov.
Publication 970 provides detailed
information about tax benefits for
education.
Tuition and fees CHARGED to the
student's account during the CALENDAR
year are included in box 2 of the 1098T.
Scholarships and grants CREDITED to the
student's account during the CALENDAR
year are included in box 4 of the 1098T.
We have no control as to when
scholarships and grants are entered to
the students' accounts.
The amounts in each box do not
necessarily relate to a term or
semester. They are determined by the
DATE they appear on the student's
account.
PLEASE NOTE - tuition and fees charged
for the spring semester, 2006, are
reported on the 2005 1098T if the
student registered in November, 2005
during early registration. If the
student registered in January, 2006, the
charges will be reported on the 2006
1098T.
1098T forms for 2005 were mailed to the
student's PERMANENT address. We are not
required to produce forms or report to
the IRS if the amount in box 4
(scholarships/grants) is greater than
the amount in box 2 (qualified tuition
and related expenses).
