Dalton State College Elderhostel programs are week-long educational events for adults aged 55 and up which are held at some of the most beautiful locations in Georgia. Three subject areas are covered in each program, with all programs beginning on Sunday and ending on Friday.

Century Of Dishonor: Saga Of The Cherokees, Cavalcade Of Jazz, And The Heart And Soul Of Appalachia 

November 5-10, 2006

Location: Amicalola Falls State Park  
Amicalola is home to a 729-foot waterfall and breathtaking view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Here, early morning mists and vivid sunsets captivate, while seasonal colors and crisp mountain air refresh.
 

 A Century Of Dishonor: The Saga Of The Cherokees  

1828: Gold was discovered in the mountains of Northern Georgia, home to the Cherokees. What would this mean for them and the land they loved? Hear stories of customs, lies and legends of a great and might people. Make kudzu basket, visit Gold Museum.

Cavalcade Of Jazz

 

Trace the growth of jazz from its roots in blues and ragtime. In New Orleans, the marching bands and small groups developed "Dixieland" jazz that spread up the Mississippi to Chicago and up the East Coast. Learn how jazz lead to the big band era.

I Hear The Mountains Singing: The Heart And Soul Of Appalachia

 

Explore the traditional tales and music of Appalachia. Discover how the dulcimer has been a part of history throughout the ages from biblical, Celtic to the Civil War. Enjoy music of the banjo and dulcimer. Opportunity to build your own dulcimer.
