Dr. Calvin Meyer, Dean of the School of Education

Welcome to Dalton State College’s School of Education website. Whether you are looking to begin a career as an Early Childhood (PK-5), Middle Grades, Secondary, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) or Special Education teacher, Dalton State’s School of Education will be able to help you meet your professional goals.

The School of Education is dedicated to the preparation of teachers and education leaders, who will know the foundations of the education profession, content for curricula, the characteristics of diverse learners, and the best practices to ensure that all students are prepared for a global society.

Dalton State's Professional Education Unit, accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC), prepares teachers not only for the North Georgia service region, but also for the entire state of Georgia and Hamilton County in Tennessee.  With our NCATE and GaPSC accreditation, our students are also equipped to be licensed in other states that have reciprocal agreements with Georgia.  Students are now able to select from Early-Childhood (PK-5), ESOL Endorsement and Secondary Education.   In the near future, Middle School and Special Education will be available.

Our mission is to Prepare Educators for a Diverse Community of Learners, emphasizing that all teachers should be competent, collaborative, caring and reflective.  We seek to accomplish this through engaging with communities of learners at all levels – P12 students, teacher candidates, university faculty and staff, community members, and state agencies. Teacher Education candidates are engaged early in their programs in P12 schools, working side-by-side with educators in diverse school settings. As a regional four-year college situated in rural Appalachia, we encourage our Teacher Education candidates to explore the regions they come from and to use that background knowledge to help them understand effective educational practices that meet the student needs of the area thus ensuring  their students will be successful.

I am delighted to be able to welcome you to the School of Education.  Whether online or face-to-face, we encourage you to visit us and to consider making Dalton State's School of Education your place to be as you prepare to become a teacher. Please feel free to stop by my office, G16 in Memorial Hall, and introduce yourself!
