How is your family different from another family? Each family had its own distinct personality, which left its mark on them as individuals. Ruling families emphasize order and independence. Protecting families are less authoritarian, highly relationship-oriented. Bonding families have people who are helpfully cooperate and relate with one another, while at the same time maintaining a sense of self. Symbiotic families show extreme relatedness and lack independence in its members as group-think dominates; individual thought is suppressed. In chaotic families, relatedness is without conscience, non-caring, insensitive, and non-trusting. |
In what ways is college different from high school? High school teachers force students to follow rules, whereas college professors allow students to make their own responsible choices. High school teachers tell students what to learn from assigned readings, college professors do not. Teachers often take time to remind you of assignments and due dates; professors expect you to read, save, and consult the course syllabus (outline); the syllabus spells out exactly what is expected of you, when it is due, and how you will be graded. High school testing is frequent and covers small amounts of material. College tests cover half the semester. |
How is a profession unlike service work? Less-educated service workers perform manual labor and earn hourly wages. Educated white-collar office workers earn a monthly salary. Service work may be skilled or unskilled, and may involve jobs such as waitress at a restaurant or a bar, a sales clerk at a department store or an apparel store at a shopping mall, cleaning houses or hotel rooms, a barista at a coffeehouse chain like Starbucks, or as a worker (or even a supervisor) at a fast food restaurant like Taco Bell, or operating a machine in a factory. White-collar careers areas include specialists in education, business management, law, ministry, and medicine. |
