An activity course seeking to introduce and involve students with the performance of fundamental swimming strokes and hydrodynamic principles. Teaching methods will include the use of a descriptive text, videos, technique posters, land and in-water practice, written and skill evaluations.
To integrate the variety of interests regarding aquatic activity (fun, fitness, socialization, competition) with the common theme of safety in, on, and around the water and to provide the student with the information and resources to make participation in aquatic activities a lifetime pursuit.
1. To experience basic equipment rescue techniques.
2. To practice survival swimming techniques.
3. To be introduced to and experience the fundamental stroke mechanics and techniques involved in the performance of the following strokes: front crawl, elementary backstroke, and back crawl.
4. To be introduced to the breaststroke and sidestroke.
5. To engage in various lap swimming and aquatic activities which will develop physical fitness components.
6. To promote an awareness of personal fitness and wellness concepts than can encourage the adoption of lifetime exercise programs.
MATERIALS:- Text: Swimming and Diving by American Red Cross
- Clothing: Swimsuit, towel, goggles
50% Written Evaluation
A Mid-Term and Final Exam will be administered and will cover material from the assigned text, handouts, lectures, and videos.
25% Skill Evaluation (skill test, drills, tournaments)
25% Attendance and Participation
100 points (-5 points for each day missed)
100 points (0-5 points for daily participation)

Classes that meet 3 times per week OR Classes that meet 2 times per week
5 absences = F (non-passing grade) 4 absences = F (non-passing grade)
An absence on an exam day will result in a loss of 10 points from exam score.
