Office hours: Will be posted on my office door and I will announce them in class as soon as they are set.  If you cannot meet at these hours, please feel free to make an appointment.  Help is also available in the Math Lab in Sequoya 140.

 

Important: The pace of this class is set by the number of class meetings and the amount of material to be covered.  It is natural for students to need extra help outside of class on certain topics.  Office hours and appointments are available for just this purpose.  Please come to see me or go to the Math Lab in Sequoya 140 (or both) if you need help.  Do not wait until it is too late.

 

Textbook: Calculus: Early Transcendentals by Anton, Bivens, and Davis, 8th edition.  We will cover Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. 

 

Prerequisite: MATH 1113 (Precalculus Mathematics).

 

Calculators: An inexpensive scientific calculator with exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric keys is needed for this course.  The calculator should not be a graphing calculator, that is, it should not be a TI-83, TI-85, TI-86, or TI-89.

 

Attendance: Class attendance is strongly encouraged.  If you are absent from class, you will be responsible for all material covered and all announcements made.

 

Homework: Homework from the book will be assigned, but not collected or graded.  You are encouraged to complete all homework assignments because most, if not all, test questions will be modeled after problems in the homework assignments.

 

Grading: There will be five hour-long tests, each counting 100 points, and also a comprehensive final exam counting 200 points, for a total of 700 points.  Your grade will be assigned using the following scale:

Make-up tests: There will be no make-up for a missed test; however, the percentage on the final exam grade will replace your lowest test grade if it is higher.  Only one missed test can be replaced; a second or third missed test will be given a grade of zero.

Honesty: Each student is expected to do his or her own work on all tests and the final exam and to neither give nor receive aid in any form.  Offenders will receive an F as their final grade.

 

Etiquette: Talking in class should be restricted solely to questions and comments pertaining to the material at hand and intended for me and the whole class to hear.  Persistent disruptive talking will result in a new seating arrangement for the talkers.

 

Electronic Communication Devices Statement: Using cellular phones, pagers, CD players, radios, and/or similar devices is prohibited in the classroom.  In an emergency, students may be contacted through the Office of Public Safety/Security at (706) 272-4461.

 

Visitors: Children and other visitors are not permitted to accompany students to classes.

 

Student learning outcomes: Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

 

  1. Understand continuity and limits, compute limits, including computing limits using L’Hopital’s Rule.
  2. Understand the derivative; take derivatives by the product, quotient, and chain rules.
  3. Differentiate polynomial, rational, trigonometric, exponential, and logarithmic functions.
  4. Analyze where functions are increasing or decreasing and where the relative extrema are.
  5. Compute absolute minima and maxima and incorporate into applications.
  6. Understand Newton’s Method, Rolle’s Theorem, and the Mean-Value Theorem.
  7. Compute definite integrals using the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.

Workforce Development: If a student receiving aid administered by the DSC Workforce Development Department drops this class or completely withdraws from the College, the Add-Drop/Withdrawal form must be taken to the Workforce Development Office first.  The office is located in the Technical Education Building, Room 140 and their hours are 9:00a.m. - 12:15p.m. and 1:30p.m. - 3:00p.m., Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, and 8:30a.m. - 12:00noon on Friday. Drop/Withdrawal Statement: The last day to drop this class without penalty is Thursday, October 27, 2006.  You will be assigned a grade of W.  After this date, withdrawal without penalty is permitted only in cases of extreme hardship as determined by the Vice President for Academic Affairs; otherwise a grade of WF will be issued. Students who wish to drop this class or withdraw from all classes should go to the Enrollment Services Office in Westcott Hall to complete the necessary form.  Students who fail to complete the official drop/withdrawal procedure will receive the grade of F.    Withdrawal from class is a student responsibility.  Before dropping any class, the college strongly advises that students meet with their academic advisor and their instructor to discuss the impact of a withdrawal on their graduation plans.  The college also strongly advises students who are receiving any type of financial aid to visit the Financial Aid Office in Pope Student Center to discuss the impact a withdrawal may have on their financial aid status.  The grade of W counts as hours attempted for the purposes of financial aid.
