What are Learning Communities?

A learning community takes place when two or more courses are linked so that the same group of students attend multiple courses together. The Instructors of the courses typically plan together so they can coordinate their instruction and assignments.

How do Learning Communities Benefit Students?   [back to the top]

1. Learning communities promote closer friendships among students and help them create study networks. These study networks often help students to be more successful in their courses.

2. Class sizes are typically limited within learning communities. Smaller class sizes allow for more in-class involvement among students and an increase in the amount of personal attention students receive from their instructors.

3. When instructors collaborate and link their courses it often makes course content more engaging and interesting.

4. Research on learning communities across the nation suggests that students who join learning communities are more satisfied with their college experience and more likely to persist to graduation.

How do I Register for a Learning Community?   [back to the top]

Learning community courses are listed on the DSC course schedule with an "LC" after the course title and a short description of the other classes in the community. They are also listed in their own separate section of the DSC course schedule at the very beginning just after the COLL 1101 courses. You can register for  learning community courses just like you would register for any other course. You can access the DSC registration system on your own to register via Banner or see your academic advisor for assistance.
