Platelets are life savers to many people who have undergone physical trauma, such as chemotherapy, open heart surgery, or organ transplant, and have weakened immune systems. The shelf life for platelets is ONLY 5 days so Blood Assurance is always in need of donors!
Donations take approximately 90 minutes: therefore, you must sign up for a specific donation time. Each platelet drive, appointments are available on a first come, first server basis at the following times: 11:00 am, 12:30 pm, 2:00 pm, and 3:30 pm. Back-up donors are also scheduled in case the scheduled donor does not meet the minimum requirements for donation.
Instructions to Donate:
- Eat before you come
- DO NOT take aspirin products for 48 hours before donations
- Be prepared to spend approximately 90 minutes to donate
- Drink plenty pf water before you r donation
- A good platelet candidate is one who's iron count is almost ALWAYS over 12.5, has a good vein and meets the required criteria as a regular blood donor.
As a platelet donor, you will be asked a series of questions prior to donation to ensure you are eligible to donate. Please be sure to bring your Blood Assurance Donor Card on a form of ID.
All platelet drives are held in the Eddie Miller Room of the Pope Student Center. To donate platelets you must SIGN-UP prior to the day of donation. If you are interested in donating please contact the Office of Student Life at 706.272.4428.
