Division of Nursing Procedure
Acquisition and Deletion of Library Materials.
- Each faculty member will request at least twelve (12) total print titles from
her assigned subject area (attached) by December 1 of each year. A list of requested books will be submitted to the Chairperson of Nursing by the end of fall semester.
- Each faculty member will be responsible for reviewing and requesting deletion of outdated Library materials from her topic area by the end of spring semester of each year in collaboration with the Library Director.
- ALL A/V material requests are to be given to the current nursing library committee member for prioritizing.
Library Collection Development Policy
The nursing collection provides library resources
for students enrolled in the associate degree nursing program and for nursing
faculty teaching in the program.
A faculty member is assigned responsibility for each of the areas of emphasis.
A list is available from the Chairperson of Nursing and the Library Director.
General Collection Guidelines
Realizing that the date of publication is critical to the relevancy of materials in nursing, the collection will generally consist of materials published within the past five years. Current editions of textbooks will be added only upon faculty request.
Additions to the Collection
Materials selection is a joint responsibility of the faculty and the library staff. Publication announcements and reviews from standard selection sources are routinely circulated to faculty to facilitate the acquisitions process. Faculty may submit recommendations for purchase from any source to the Library Director.
Withdrawal of Materials from the Collection
While the withdrawal of obsolete material is a continuous process, library staff and faculty must work cooperatively to access the state of the library collection. A thorough evaluation of the nursing collection will be conducted annually. Faculty will recommend titles of withdrawal to the Library Director who will respond in writing regarding action taken. Titles recommended for withdrawal will be retained only if they are considered to have historical significance or if they are relevant to other disciplines.
Assessment
The Library Director will provide the following information to the Chairperson of the Division of Nursing annually in September.
- An analysis of the number of books in the nursing collection by subject
area and date of publication.-
An analysis of the number of books added to and withdrawn from the
nursing collection during the year.-
A current listing of periodical titles and audiovisual materials relevant to nursing.
