The Dalton art scene will be hopping when four local institutions host a four-stop Gallery Hop Friday, March 4. The Convention & Visitors Bureau trolley will shuttle art patrons and others between exhibits at The Creative Arts Guild, Dalton State College, Kellie Smith Design Studio and Michael’s Fine Arts.
Kellie Smith reports that the Kellie Smith Design Studio will be exhibiting paintings and drawings by Jerry Morrison, a client of Cross Plains Community Partner and current student of The Creative Arts Guild. The gallery opening for Morrision’s works will be 5:00-8:00 Friday evening at the design studio which is located at 200 North Hamilton Street.
The Creative Arts Guild will host the opening of a retrospective by area artists Waldo Vinces and Victoria Martin-Gilly, according to Executive Director Terry Tomasello. The show, which runs the month of March at the Guild, will feature small and large scale abstract paintings, including encaustics which use hot wax to form images on canvas. The Guild, located at 520 W. Waugh Street, will host its First Friday opening from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.; the opening event will culminate with a silent auction of a few pieces of Vinces’ and Martin-Gilly’s work.
Patrons can then hop on the Downtown Trolley and shuttle to Dalton State College where watercolors by local artist Gene Mealor are on display at The James E. Brown Center. Mealor, a former employee of Brown Industries, captured images of many iconic Dalton-area landmarks, including the old Courthouse, downtown eateries, roadside chenille houses and others during the 1970s and 80s. The Mealor exhibit is on display at The Brown Center, courtesy of the James E. Brown family and Brown Industries, and is curated by the Bandy Heritage Center for Northwest Georgia. The Gallery Hop reception will be 5:30 to 7:30 Friday evening.
Patrons can also shuttle to Michael’s Fine Arts Gallery, located at 1325 Dug Gap Road, where landscapes by Calhoun artist Joe Glasser will be on display through the month of March. Glasser works in oils, acrylics and pencil, according to Michael Thatcher of Michael’s Fine Arts. The opening reception at Michael’s begins at 6:00 p.m.
“We appreciate the Guild and Kellie Smith Design Studio and Michael’s Fine Arts allowing us to tag on to their Gallery Hop,” said Dalton State President Dr. John Schwenn. “We believe this will be a wonderful evening for the arts in our community. We are also deeply appreciative of the Dalton Convention and Visitors Bureau for making the trolley available to shuttle guests from one venue to another.”
