Students Honored for Academic Achievement at Dalton State

The best and brightest of Dalton State College were honored recently at the College’s 37th Annual Honors Convocation. A total of 59 awards were presented to students for academic achievement during the year.

Sen. Charlie Bethel presented the Georgia General Assembly Academic Recognition Award to Christopher M. Whaley who is majoring in business. The Georgia legislature recognizes one student from each of the University System of Georgia’s 35 colleges and universities for overall academic achievement.

Dr. Donna Mayo, Dean of the School of Business, presented the following awards: Outstanding Student in Accounting, awarded to Vickie L. Swinney; Outstanding Student in Management, to John D. Ralston; Outstanding Student in Management Information Systems, to Gary E. Rosser; Outstanding Student in Marketing, to Tera S. Green; Outstanding Student in Technology Management, to Janet G. Hayes; Georgia Society of CPAs Award for Academic Excellence, to Brett Rank;  and Outstanding Student in the School of Business, to Christopher M. Whaley.

Dr. Calvin Meyer, Dean of the School of Education, presented awards in: Academic Excellence in ESOL Education, to Leah Martin; Academic Excellence in Mathematics Education, to Jessica Defore; Academic Excellence in Reading/Language Arts Education, to Edith Esparza; Academic Excellence in Science Education, to Shan Bishop; Academic Excellence in Social Studies Education, to Regina Franklin; Technology Integration Award, to Heather Thomas; Leadership Award, to Justin Payne; Academic Excellence in Secondary Education, to Michael Corley; Academic Excellence in Early Childhood Education, to Stacey Abrams; Exemplar of the Program in Secondary Education, to Irene Quintero; and Exemplar of the Program in Early Childhood Education, to Kimberly Sapp.

Dr. Mary Nielsen, Dean of the School of Liberal Arts, presented the following awards from the Department of Humanities: Rob Narke Award for Academic Excellence in Communication, to Frank Hilliker; Jane Parks Award for Academic Excellence in Composition, to Julia Koschulla; Academic Excellence in Humanities, to Li Wang; Sara Myers Award for Academic Excellence in Literature, to Kathryn E. Hayes; Karen Davis Award for Academic Excellence in Speech, to Nicole Surrusco; and Academic Excellence in Theatre, to Jennifer Wade.

For the Department of Social Sciences, Dean Nielsen presented the following awards: Academic Excellence in American History, to Ethan Samples; Academic Excellence in Criminal Justice, to Justin Johns; Academic Excellence in Geography, to Tommy Pettyjohn; Academic Excellence in Political Science, to Amanda Siskey; Academic Excellence in Psychology, to Jamie Sherlock; Academic Excellence in Sociology, to Hannah Morgan; and Academic Excellence in World Civilization, to Cortney Braswell.

Dr. Cordia Starling, Dean of the School of Nursing, presented the G.L. Westcott Award for Nursing, to Sonia “Freda” Hoffman; and the Highest Academic Average in Nursing, to both Karen Marie Schaaf and Andrea Lynne Talbot.

Dr. Randall Griffus, Dean of the School of Sciences and Mathematics, presented the following awards: Bill Jump Award for Academic Excellence in Biology, to Andrew Boatwright; Arvine Phelps Award for Academic Excellence in Calculus, to Richard E. Seeman; Bob Cooper Award for Academic Excellence in Chemistry, to Tabitha Dawn Kinard; Academic Excellence in Human Anatomy and Physiology, to both Cynthia Hidalgo and Robert Pittman; Arvine Phelps Award for Academic Excellence in Mathematics, to Michael Corley; and David Wycherley Award for Academic Excellence in Physics, to Gregory A. Humble.

Dr. Spencer Zeiger, Dean of the School of Social Work, presented these awards: Award for Outstanding Academic Performance, Junior, to Jennifer A. Rodriguez; Award for Outstanding Academic Performance, Senior, to Marlen Rodriguez; Social Work Leadership Award, to Robin Richardson; and Syril’s Rising Star Award, to Zachary Townsend.

Dr. Charles Johnson, Dean of the School of Technology, presented awards for Outstanding Student in Computer Networking and Service Technology, to Oscar A. Ramirez; Outstanding Student in Industrial Electrical and Electronic Technology, to Jonathan Ryan Jones; Outstanding Student in Licensed Practical Nursing, for Academic Excellence, to Rhonda Lynn Phillips; Outstanding Student in Licensed Practical Nursing, for Clinical Excellence, to Stephanie Lynn Cameron; Outstanding Student in Medical Assisting, to Dana Michelle Kirby; Outstanding Student in Medical Laboratory Technology, to Brett Hammonds Ingle; Outstanding Student in Office and Business Technology, to Patricia Jean Findley; Outstanding Student in Radiologic Technology, to Cara LeeAnn Elkins; Outstanding Student in Respiratory Therapy, for Service Excellence, to Loryn Nicole Hendershot; Outstanding Student in Respiratory Therapy, for Academic Excellence, to Blake C.
