Bandy Gym to Be Renovated for Roadrunner Volleyball
November 27, 2012
Design work will begin soon to renovate Dalton State’s Bandy Gym for use as the home court for Roadrunner volleyball and as a basketball practice facility.
The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia last week approved the renovation project which will be funded by The John Willis Mashburn Charitable Trust through the Dalton State Foundation.
“Everything will look new but will pay homage to the success of the Roadrunner basketball program of the Dalton Junior College years,” said Athletic Director Derek Waugh. “We will replace the original gym floor with a new wood floor, remove the old bleachers, replace the ceiling, install new lighting, and modernize the entrance.”
“Bandy Gym will be the home of the volleyball team which starts play in 2013 and creates enhanced opportunities for Dalton State intramural athletics and academic physical education classes,” Waugh said.
Local architect Gregg Sims will design the project.
Once completed, Bandy Gym will join The Farm, Northwest Georgia Trade Center, Lakeshore Tennis complex, and the Creative Arts Guild gymnastics studio as competition and practice venues for Dalton State intercollegiate athletics. “The quality of our facilities will be right up there with the best in the country at our level,” Waugh said.
“As we move forward with athletics, everything we do is done with an eye towards enhancing campus and the institution in general,” he said. “This renovation will really make Bandy Gymnasium pop which is important because it is a frequent destination for both current students and prospective students.”
