Current Northwest Whitfield High School golf coach, Jim McGrew, has been named head women’s golf coach at Dalton State. Marsha Whitener, who has been a prolific golfer in the Dalton area for more than 30 years, will serve as his assistant. Both coaches will work with Ben Rickett, who is the Director of Golf and the head men’s golf coach.

McGrew has directed the golf program at Northwest Whitfield for the past eight years. He has led the boys’ program to four region championships during his tenure, and his 2009 girls’ team won the Georgia state championship. He also has spent the past 23 years roaming the sidelines as a coach for the Bruins football program.

“I am excited about the opportunity to join the Dalton State Athletic Program,” McGrew said. “As a local high school coach, I always thought that if Dalton State had a golf program that it could become an elite program. I look forward to the challenge of making that a reality and helping the Dalton State golf program compete for championships on a yearly basis.”

Whitener, who is a distant relative of carpet and bedspread pioneer, Catherine Evans Whitener, is acknowledged as one of the finest amateur women’s golfers in Northwest Georgia. She has been the Ladies Club Champion at The Farm 10 different times and has been the Ladies Club Champion at the Dalton Golf and Country Club 15 times. She was also the Georgia State Golf Association’s Senior Ladies Champion in 2002.

She has co-chaired numerous tournaments in the area and served on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Women’s Golf Association. She also co-founded Dalton’s famous “Avenue of the Flags” in 1991.

“There are not enough adjectives to describe how excited I am to become part of the Dalton State golf program,” Whitener said. “I pray that my playing experience at The Farm, my organizational skills as golf tournament director, and my working with all ages of youth will be the perfect match for a successful golf team. The athletic staff has already made me feel like family. I am one happy lady to have this opportunity.”

Coach Rickett, who is fresh off his appearance at the Masters, adds “I am excited about the experience that both coaches bring to the table. Jim has been a successful coach for many years and has a great contact base around the state of Georgia. His knowledge of Georgia high school golf is very impressive which will be extremely helpful from a recruiting standpoint. Marsha is also a great addition to the program with such a great playing résumé. Marsha is a very experienced golfer at the local and state level; she will be a huge asset to Dalton State Golf. We are already all hard at work to bring great golf to Dalton State and the community.”
