Dalton State Welcomes Scholar/Author Irizarry

Latinization of US Schools
Dr. Jason Irizarry will speak on his book “The Latinization of US Schools: Successful Learning and Teaching in Shifting Cultural Contexts” in a pair of programs Monday at Dalton State.

Dalton State welcomes researcher, educator, and author, Dr. Jason Irizarry, on Monday, November 11, in two presentations on his book, “The Latinization of U.S. Schools: Successful Teaching and Learning in Shifting Cultural Contexts.” He will speak at 12 noon and again at 6 pm; both programs are free and open to the public.

Dr. Irizarry is the Director of Urban Education and an Associate Professor in the College of Education at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. He has taught courses in multicultural education, culturally responsive curriculum development, urban education, and participatory action research for undergraduate and graduate students.

As a researcher, Dr. Irizarry focusses on promoting the academic achievement of youth in urban schools by addressing issues associated with teacher education. His findings have been published or accepted for publication in many peer-reviewed journals such as “Teachers College Record,” “American Educational Research Journal,” “Education and Urban Society,” “Multicultural Perspectives,” “Journal of Latinos and Education,” and “Centro Journal of Puerto Rican Studies,” among others.

“Dr. Irizarry's presence on the DSC campus is sure to stimulate passionate dialogue pertaining to the schooling lives of Latina/o youth in Dalton and the extent to which they have the potential to become critical change agents in our community,” says Dr. Rene Antrop-Gonzalez, Goizueta Foundation Chair of Education and Professor of Education in Dalton State’s School of Education.

Dr. Irizarry will speak Monday at noon to Dalton State students, faculty and interested community members in a program in room 105 at The James E. Brown Center. After a presentation on his book he will lead a workshop on Youth Participatory Action Research. YPAR, he says, is a philosophy and methodology that arms youth with research tools that enable them to conduct research in their schools and communities and present their findings to educators and other interested community members.

He will speak again at 6 pm in room 202 of The James E. Brown Center on his book; the evening program is designed primarily for educators and community members unable to make it to the earlier program.
