Somewhere between high school and college is a place called Summer Academy where select students from North Georgia can experience a sampling of life at Dalton State before actually being admitted to college.

Summer Academy is a college readiness program designed to help selected students increase their chances of attending college after completing high school, according to Dr. Angela Harris, Assistant Vice President of Enrollment Services at Dalton State.

“High school prepares students for high school graduation, and not always for the rigor of college,” she says. “The purpose of Summer Academy is to increase students’ skills in essential areas like mathematics, reading, and writing.”

Dalton State College has teamed up with faculty from Morris Innovative High School, Dalton High School, and retirees from other Whitfield County schools to teach in core content areas. Students can also choose to receive more focused instruction in English, math, or reading and participate in a speaker series in which Dalton State faculty, staff, and administrators share their perspectives on college education and its value in the workplace, home, and community.

“The speaker series includes a number of sessions designed to increase students’ motivation to pursue higher education, value the benefits of higher education, and increase awareness of higher education opportunities,” says Harris.

The four-week transition program has taken place on the Dalton State campus throughout the month of June

“What is unique about Summer Academy is that students can attend the 16-day program without having to be accepted to the College,” she continues. “Summer Academy could be a means for these students who would like to attend college to possibly raise their entrance exam scores so they can attend Dalton State.”

Summer Academy students will graduate from the program Thursday.
