Dalton State College Foundation officials announced today that
Dora Salazar Price, class of 1984, has made a gift to endow a
scholarship for the benefit of students attending Dalton State.
The gift will endow the Rita Salazar Scholarship, which is named
for Price’s mother.
“With the purpose of promoting education as well as giving back
to the community that has given us so much, our family decided
that we could honor our mother by starting a scholarship bearing
her name,” Price said.
Born in Mexico, Rita Salazar studied by candlelight late at
night after completing her farm chores during the day. She
married her childhood sweetheart, Manuel Salazar, and moved
first to Florida then to Dalton where she raised her family.
“We hope the students receiving this scholarship will appreciate
the gift of learning and the freedom that education provides,”
Price said.
“Our hope is that these recipients will live the example of our
mother: ‘Do good without seeing to whom.’”
Scholarships are a major priority for the DSC Foundation, said
David Elrod, director of institutional advancement for Dalton
State.
“To have the Salazar family name associated with the college in
this way is an honor for us,” he said.
“And to know that current and future generations of students
will benefit from the generosity of one our alums is equally
rewarding.”
The Foundation assists more than 100 students annually with
scholarship awards for financial need and academic merit.
“Dora’s example of investing in Dalton State for the benefit of
others is a gift that will pay dividends for years to come,”
said Elrod.
“With more students than ever seeking financial assistance to
attend classes, the establishment of the Rita Salazar
Scholarship couldn’t come at a better time.”
The Rita Salazar Scholarship will be awarded on an annual basis
beginning in April.
