Dalton State College receives $500,000 grant from the Goizueta Foundation

Dalton State College has received a $500,000 grant from The Goizueta Foundation to support student scholarships and a comprehensive enrollment management plan.

Over the next three years, $466,548 of the grant will fund Hispanic/Latino Achievement Scholarships, helping the college to fulfill its access mission for northwest Georgians.  The other $33,554 of the grant will support professional development in the college’s Office of Enrollment and Student Services to focus on enrollment management and student retention.

“We are incredibly grateful to The Goizueta Foundation for its investment in Dalton State,” says President John O. Schwenn, “and for its confidence in our mission to provide a quality educational experience for northwest Georgians.”

“With more students than ever seeking financial aid to attend classes, these new Hispanic/Latino Achievement Scholarships open the door for more students to attend Dalton State and pursue their career goals,” he said.

Students who qualify for the Achievement Scholarships are eligible to receive 75 percent of the tuition costs, plus up to $300 a year for books.  Those who receive the need-based funds must enroll full-time in order to maintain the scholarships.

“One of the benefits of the Achievement Scholarships is that in many cases students will be able to attend school full-time while reducing their work hours, or be able to take a break from work altogether, which should result in higher academic success,” says Jodi Johnson, Vice President for Enrollment and Student Services.

“We can put this grant to work immediately for the benefit of our students, adding as much as $150,000 to our scholarship offerings on an annual basis,” she said.

The $33,554 portion of the grant will fund training and professional development opportunities to enhance the overall enrollment program at Dalton State, said Johnson, noting that particular emphasis will be placed on training that will result in improving student success, retention, and graduation rates.

Both of the grant components support Dalton State’s 2009-2012 strategic plan.

The Atlanta-based Goizueta Foundation was established in 1992 by the late President and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company, Mr. Roberto C. Goizueta.  The mission of The Goizueta Foundation is to assist organizations that promote and provide educational opportunities that enrich individuals’ lives.
