Dalton State News Releases
Dalton State to present Westcott Lecturer Neely Young on April 15
Archives >>
Neely Young, the Editor and Publisher of Georgia Trend magazine, will be this year’s Westcott Lecturer when he speaks at Dalton State College on Tuesday, April 15, at 7:00 pm. The lecture, which will be held in Goodroe Auditorium, is free and open to the public.

Young, an award-winning columnist, will give Georgia Trend’s perspective on business and politics in Georgia.

The Westcott Lecture Series was established by the Dalton Civitan Club in 1979 to honor the late G. Lamar Westcott, a local businessman and philanthropist.

“Traditionally, Westcott Lecturers have spoken about issues that are of interest to the community, and many have focused on topics that are religious or political in nature,” says Jane Taylor, Director of Public Relations for Dalton State College.

“We are fortunate to have Mr. Young as the 2008 Westcott Lecturer. He has worked across the state as either an editor and/or publisher for many newspapers, so he understands the issues that are important to Georgians.”

Young worked at the Daily Citizen News in Dalton in the 1980s, but he left the paper in 1986 to became the CEO of Morris Newspaper Corporation, which owns 40 newspapers in six states..

In 1989, he formed Southern Publishing Company with Tom Cousins and for nine years built a newspaper chain of 13 Georgia newspapers. Southern Publishing was sold in 1998 to Community Newspaper Holdings. In January of 1999, he purchased Georgia Trend, a 50,000-circulation business and political magazine that is published in all 159 counties in Georgia.

Professionally, Young has served as President of the Georgia Press Association, Associated Press of Georgia, and Chairman of the Georgia Press Education Foundation. He served on the Board of the University of Georgia Henry W. Grady School of Journalism and the Board of the School of Urban Affairs at Georgia State University. He has been President of the Clayton County Rotary Club and chaired the Clayton County Chamber of Commerce.
