As one of 10 colleges nationwide to be chosen to participate in
an American Democracy Project’s initiative, Dalton State will
offer a series of events that are intended to make students more
aware of the financial challenges facing the nation over the
coming decades.
On April 14-15, students will be invited to participate in
“America’s Future: Protecting the Fiscal Health of Our
Democracy,” a program designed to inform students about the
growing public debt that has accumulated in the last decade.
“As the nation plunges itself into trillions of dollars in debt,
it will be the taxpayers of tomorrow, today’s college students,
who will be forced to pay the bill,” says Dr. Tony Simones,
Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice and the coordinator of
the American Democracy Project initiative on campus.
“The reason that college students are saddled with this debt is
that most young people neither pay attention, nor do they vote.
These events are intended to make college students aware of the
problem and provoke them into action to protect their economic
future.”
The events on campus will be:
“Played for Fools: Today’s College Students, Tomorrow’s
Taxpayers,” a presentation by Dr. Simones in the Goodroe
Auditorium of Memorial Hall on Tuesday, April 14, at 1:00 p.m.
A showing of the film “I.O.U.S.A.” on Tuesday, April 14, in the
Goodroe Auditorium of Memorial Hall at 6:30 pm.
“Are We Ruining America’s Future?” a presentation by Dr. Simones
on Wednesday, April 15, at the Brown Center at 12:30 p.m.
