Dalton State College Respiratory Therapy Club to sponsor Cystic Fibrosis Walk
Archives >>
Cystic Fibrosis, a life-threatening genetic illness that affects the lungs and the pancreas, makes breathing very difficult for its victims and can result in a shortened lifespan and chronic respiratory illnesses.

So it’s no surprise that the Dalton State College Respiratory Therapy Club wants to help raise awareness of the disease by sponsoring a Cystic Fibrosis Walk on Saturday, May 10.

“This disease affects normal respiration because of the mucous that builds up in a sufferer’s lungs,” says Robby Case, Respiratory Club President and first-year Respiratory Therapy student.

“It causes excess secretions to develop in the mucous membranes in the lungs, which results in excessive respiratory infections. Also, the excess secretions in the pancreas result in the lack of the body’s ability to extract nutrients.”

For the second year in a row, club members will be on hand to accept registrations for the walk beginning at 8:30am in front of the Westcott Building on campus.

“The walk will actually begin at 9:30,” says Case, noting that the entire route, which circles the heart of the Dalton State campus twice, will be three miles.

“But participants can walk for as little or as much of the distance as they want,” he says. “Our main goal is to raise awareness about this disease, so we hope people will come out and learn more about it.”

There will be refreshments and entertainment, in the form of music, during the event, Case says, and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation staff member Kirsten Black, from the Atlanta office, will be on hand to answer questions about the disease.

While there is no cost to participate in the Cystic Fibrosis Walk, donations will be accepted and can be given before or after the walk.

“People can also go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s website at cff.org and can pledge donations under Dalton State College’s name.”

Several groups have already banded together to form teams, Case says, such as the Social Work Club and the Library staff.
