Dalton State News Releases
RecycleMania
RecycleMania is a friendly competition among college and university recycling programs across the U.S.  This year there are 496 schools participating, including 10 in Georgia.  During 10 weeks each spring, schools compete in different contests to see which institution can collect the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate.  Schools report measurements on a weekly basis.  RecycleMania is divided into two divisions, the Competition Division and Benchmark Division.  As this is our first year of participation, DSC has chosen to enter the Benchmark Division which is less formal and does not include placement in the official rankings or eligibility to win any categories.  However, we will be able to see how our recycling efforts compare with those around the country.  The campus is currently recycling all forms of paper, aluminum, and cardboard.  By the beginning of February, bins for the collection of plastic bottles will be placed in all the campus buildings.  The competition began on January 19th and will conclude on March 27th.

Dr. Guo goes "Home" but not "Alone"
Release Date: June 8, 2005

For Assistant Professor Baogang Guo, a native of China, shepherding Dalton State and other University System of Georgia students through his homeland was "the trip of a lifetime."

Dr. Guo was Program Director for this year's new Summer Study in China study abroad program, sponsored by the Regents' Global Center of the University System. During the four-week program, students earned six hours of academic credit while touring such landmark cities such as Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, Luoyang, and Dengfeng.

"We visited the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and many other cultural sites," says Dr. Guo, a native Zhengzhou in the Henan Province who earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Zhengzhou University. He moved to the United States in 1986 to enroll in doctoral studies at Brandeis University in Massachusetts and has taught Political Science at Dalton State since 2000.

The general studies program was housed at Zhengshou University next to many historical and cultural sites and courses were taught by faculty from USG institutions.

In addition to academic "for-credit" courses offered this summer, students were able choose to participate in additional extracurricular activities such as martial arts, Tai-Chi, Chinese dances, culinary arts and other programs, all taught by local Chinese teachers.

"All of the instruction was in English, but most of the five faculty members who accompanied the students are fluent in Chinese," Dr. Guo said.
