Three
recent Dalton State College graduates have been selected to be
New Teacher Assistance Grants recipients, and will receive a
$1,000 stipend to purchase supplies for their classrooms. The
grant program is sponsored by Georgia Power.
The 2008 graduates, who each earned a Bachelor of Science in
Early Childhood Education (ECE) degree in May, are Kyle
Abernathy, Laura Aldridge, and Mark Beckler.
“We feel very honored to have three of our 2008 graduates chosen
for these awards,” says Interim Dean for the School of Education
Carol Brand. “In the past, we’ve only had one student each year
receive this honor.
“This fall, Kyle will be teaching for the Whitfield County
Schools, Laura is employed by the Walker County School System,
and Mark has been hired by the Calhoun City Schools.”
The New Teacher Assistance Grants are given to students from
each of the 15 colleges and universities in the state of Georgia
that offers a degree in education. Each institution nominates up
to five students for the grant, and Georgia Power selects the
recipients.
This year, 35 students were chosen from across the state of
Georgia.
An Awards Luncheon will take place on September 13 at the
Georgia Power corporate headquarters in Atlanta, where these new
teachers will be officially recognized for their achievements.
“As always, it was difficult to select the winners because
everyone who was nominated is very deserving,” says Emelyne
Mosier, Georgia Power representative. “Because of the diversity
among the candidates, we were able to select an excellent group
of winners.”
