Dalton State College announces Fine Arts events for fall
Archives >>
Dalton State College will offer evenings of music, theater, and literature during the three Fine Arts and Lecture Series events planned for this fall, beginning in September.

Events scheduled include an outdoor concert featuring the jazz band “Grogus” on September 24, a traveling theater production of “The Magic Lantern Show” on October 20, and a lecture by author Pamela Duncan on November 11.

All events will take place at 7:30 p.m. and are free and open to the public.

“We expect that these musical and dramatic acts and our fall lecture will appeal to varied audiences this fall,” says Jane Taylor, Director of Public Relations for Dalton State.

“We’re especially excited about opening this season with a concert by Grogus because this will, weather permitting, be our first outdoor concert at the College since the bell tower and quadrangle were completed last year.”

If the weather cooperates, Taylor says, concert goers can sit in chairs on lawn of the quadrangle facing the stage below the bell tower to hear Latin jazz, Salsa, and African-Caribbean jazz performed by a popular Athens, Georgia, based band. Some attendees may prefer to bring picnic blankets and sit upon the lawn, she adds, noting that if it rains the concert will be held in Goodroe Auditorium of Memorial Hall.

The other two events will take place in Goodroe Auditorium. The Magic Lantern Show uses antique equipment, content, music, and the dramatic style of the 1890s to recreate Victorian magic-lantern shows. Each show combines popular Victorian stories, songs, and animated comedy, all illustrated with magic-lantern slides that change on the screen about every 30 seconds.

Pamela Duncan is the author of “Moon Women,” “Plant Life,” and “The Big Beautiful.” She is a native of North Carolina who teaches creative writing at Western Carolina University. Her first novel, “Moon Women,” was a Southeastern Booksellers Association award finalist, and her second novel, “Plant Life,” won the 2003 Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Fiction.

Although no reservations are required for these events, seating is limited, so those interested in attending are encouraged to arrive early. For more information, please call 272-4469.
