The
Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia approved
Dalton State College’s request to begin offering residential
housing for students in the fall of 2009, College officials
announced today.
The Wood Valley Apartments on College Drive, which were
purchased by the Dalton State College Foundation in 2005, will
be the site of the apartment-style dwellings, which will likely
maintain their current configuration as one, two, and
three-bedroom units.
“We are in the process of informing current students who
currently live in those apartment units that they will be given
the opportunity to apply for student housing there for next
fall,” says Jodi Johnson, Vice President for Enrollment and
Student Services.
“We expect that students will have a number of questions, so we
will be hosting an informational meeting in November on campus.”
Initially, the College plans to fill 272 beds within the
apartment complex. While the buildings will be coeducational,
each apartment unit will be rented to same-sex occupants.
Students will pay a semester room fee, which includes utilities
and basic cable and internet service.
“Students will pay their semester rent at the beginning of each
term, just like they currently do with tuition, so they’ll be
able to use whatever financial aid funding they may have left
over to help with the costs,” Johnson says, noting that the cost
for individual semester room rates is not yet available.
“In the next few weeks, we’ll be finalizing the new pricing structure and
payment plans, and we’ll be deciding on the configurations of
each apartment unit,” she adds, noting that while the College
does not have a student meal plan, each apartment unit will be
equipped with a full kitchen.
Dalton State College public safety officers will regularly
patrol the apartment complex, officials say, just as they do for
the rest of the campus, including at night and on weekends.
Another action taken by the Board of Regents during the meeting
was to approve the College’s plans to build a parking deck to be
located off of George Rice Drive on the west side of the campus.
