As part of Dollar General’s ongoing efforts to promote
literacy, district manager Henry Forrester recently
presented a check for $5,000 to Sherry Riley, director
of the Dalton State College Adult Education Program, for
literacy services in Whitfield and Murray Counties.
Funds for the award were collected through donations
made at local Dollar General stores. Pictured at the
presentation are, from left: Dollar General store

change can change lives. This is a fact well illustrated by the
success of Dollar General’s efforts to remove obstacles for
those who want to learn to read, to obtain a GED, or to learn
English as a second language.
Through cash donation cubes located at store registers and the
proceeds of a golf tournament held annually for Dollar General
vendors, the company collected over eight million dollars for
literacy during 2007, with regional contributions exceeding
$115,000.
“We’d like to congratulate all of our managers for their efforts
on behalf of this worthy cause, and we are especially proud to
announce that donations at our Spring Place store, which is
managed by Sherry Bryson, placed second out of 8,000 stores
across the country,” said Henry Forrester, Dollar General
district manager.
The company launched its first literacy effort in 1987–a grass
roots program which, since its inception, has provided more than
50,000 referrals to literacy programs in communities served by
Dollar General.
Locally, this year the program has provided grants to six area
schools to support of their adult literacy efforts, with its
most recent award of $5,000 presented to the Whitfield and
Murray County Adult Education Programs coordinated through
Dalton State College.
“We want to thank Dollar General for all of its work on behalf
of adult literacy, and we are especially appreciative of this
grant for our programs in Whitfield and Murray Counties,” said
Sherry Riley, adult education program director for Dalton State
College.
“And we would like to express our gratitude for the support of
our customers,” added Forrester. “Thanks to everyone who
contributes to this worthy cause by donating to the cash cubes
at our registers.”
Nonprofit programs that teach reading, provide GED preparation,
or teach English as a second language skills and that are
located in areas served by Dollar General are eligible to apply
for the literacy grants supported by these donations. For
