 Dalton State welcomes author Melanie Sumner to speak on November 13

Melanie Sumner, author of the novel The School of Beauty and Charm, will give a reading and will discuss the art of writing fiction at Dalton State College on Monday, November 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Memorial Hall.

Sponsored by the Fine Arts and Lecture Series, the event is free and open to the public.

“Melanie Sumner’s first novel, Polite Society, won the Whiting Award in 1996 and many of her short stories have been anthologized over the past decade,” says Jane Taylor, Director of Public Relations at Dalton State.
 


“We are delighted to have her with us to share her insights on the art of creative writing and to hear from some of her works.”

Sumner is an Associate Professor of English at Shorter College in Rome, Georgia, where she teaches classes in creative writing and literature. Her teaching and writing background includes time spent as a Peace Corps volunteer and English instructor in Senegal, a writing instructor and workshop leader in Taos, New Mexico, and a writer-in-residence at her alma mater, The University of North Carolina.

Her short fiction and creative nonfiction work has been published numerous journals and anthologies including New Stories from the South: The Year’s Best (in both 1994 and 2000), The New Yorker, Harper’s Magazine, and The New York Times Sophisticated Traveler.
