Dalton State College’s Saturday of
Stars has new event |
|
Release Date: Dec. 05, 2006

Area middle schoolers who participated in Saturday of
Stars at Dalton State College recently were able to hone
their investigative skills in a CSI / DSC lab.
The new “CSI” lab was just one of six educational
activities offered during this fall’s program, which is
sponsored by the Post Secondary Enrichment Program
(PREP), and which provides enrichment activities for
area seventh grade students.
In CSI / DSC, students examined “evidence” to help them
determine the characteristics of different “bones” they
were given. |

“Students learned how to determine the race, sex, age
and height of ‘victims’ by examining such traits as the
shape of the nostrils, the bridge of the nose, the jaw,
the eye orbits and the teeth,” said Sherri Stafford,
Director of PREP at Dalton State.
“They also learned how to determine if a stain was made
from blood or another substance,” she said, adding that
the new activity, taught by Dalton State College
professors Dr. Celeste Humphrey and Dr. Kerry Dunbar,
was very popular this year.
Students were also able to learn how to experiment with
gooey substances in the “Slime Lab,” could learn the
principles of displacement of water, and were able to
play games testing their skills in economics and math.
Representatives from Dalton State’s Enrollment Services
office were on hand to answer questions about
preparation for college, and Student Ambassadors offered
tours of the campus.
As in events past, the Saturday of Stars program
included hands-on learning activities taught by College
faculty and concluded with a pizza lunch.
“This was one of the most successful Saturday of Stars
events that we have hosted,” Stafford added, noting that
the program is free to all who attend, and that lunch is
provided for both students and their parents. The next
Saturday of Stars is set for March 17 of 2007.
