In November, two groups of Dalton State College students
enrolled in Business Administration degree programs participated
in Shaw Industries’ first Information Systems Career Day.
After a brief introduction to the company, students were given
tours of the Information System (IS) and Research and
Development (R&D) facilities at Shaw. They were also given an
opportunity to visit exhibits showcasing the corporation’s Web
Development, Business Support Services, and Strategic Planning
operations, which are manned by IS groups.
“One of the highlights of the tours included a visit to the
highly-secure mainframe area and the color-development section
of R&D,” comments Associate Professor of Management Information
Systems Bruce Hungerford.
“Students also had an opportunity to ask senior members of the
IS staff questions about opportunities at Shaw and about
opportunities in the field of Information Systems in general,”
he adds.
Hungerford said that Shaw officials explained that with the
ever-increasing importance of the IS function throughout the
economy, and with the retirement of “baby boomers” on the
horizon, that opportunities in IS will be “tremendous” in the
future.
“Shaw officials also said that hiring qualified Information
Systems staff will become increasingly difficult, and that they
hope to start cultivating new ‘local talent,’ which we were
delighted to hear,” Hungerford adds.
During each session, a drawing was held for a $500 scholarship
and for books and other items. Nickole Pitts, who attended the
morning session, won the $500 scholarship that will help her
continue her studies at Dalton State.
Also attending the morning session were Kristy Conner, Melissa
Sparks, and Matthew Welch, accompanied by Professor of
Management Information Systems Joe Baxter and Hungerford. The
evening session was attended by Bea Brahmbhatt, Ray Dales, Cindy
Ellis, Mayra Espitia, Ricky Robertson, Nathan Smith, Scott
Taylor, and Hungerford.
“Shaw has indicated that they wish to make IS Career Day an
annual event,” says Hungerford. “If so, Dalton State certainly
plans to participate.”
