Welcome from the Dean

Welcome to the home page of the School of Social Work. Social work is the profession that offers people who want to help others the chance to develop specific skills for practice in a wide range of health and human service agencies. At DSC we offer the associate’s degree with a two-year plan of study and the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree with a four-year plan of study. The associate’s degree allows a student to begin employment at the paraprofessional level and/or to apply for admission to the upper division for the BSW degree. The BSW is the nationally recognized degree for generalist or entry-level social work practice. It also prepares a student for future graduate study for the Master of Social Work (MSW) degree.

The DSC BSW degree is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the Council on Social Work Accreditation. In addition to the core content shared with all accredited social work programs, the DSC BSW program offers preparation for social work in Northwest Georgia with the emerging Latino population and with the historic Appalachian population. There are special opportunities for learning about the strengths of these two populations, as well as approaches to understanding other diverse groups. The cultural competence training related to learning Spanish and the cultural immersion experience in Mexico provide enhanced skills for social work practice in Northwest Georgia.

We hope that you will consider social work as a profession. The job market is very good. Many employers are seeking our graduates. We also have a special grant called the IV-E Program to train child welfare workers for a career in child welfare in the Georgia Department of Family and Children’s Services. After being accepted into the upper-division of the DSC BSW Program, a student may apply online at http://gadfcs.org/randr

The information on this page will give you an overview of the program, the faculty, and the exceptional opportunities available to our students. If we can assist you in any way, please get in touch through the links on this web page or by telephone. We will be happy to discuss the many possibilities of a career in social work and the rewards of knowing that you can make a real difference in people’s lives.
