Seasoned traveler Carol Burton, DSC Destinations Coordinator, has
never been to England.
But as the former Elderhostel Coordinator for Dalton State, she
knows more than most about how to lead groups of travelers on
enriching trips, mostly in the state of Georgia. On April 24, Burton
will help shepherd 28 other local travelers on a trip – this time
across the ocean – to explore the “British Landscapes: England,
Scotland and Wales.”
“The response to Dalton State’s first travel learning trip, the trip
called ‘British Landscapes,’ far exceeded our expectations,” says
Burton. “We have had people from the Dalton area and their out of
town friends, as well as former Elderhostelers, sign up for this
trip. And they’re all so exited about what they’re going to see and
do when they get there.”

Courtney Yarbrough, Personal Growth and Enrichment Coordinator, and
Carol Burton, DSC Destinations Coordinator, want to know "where in
the
world" future travelers want to go. They are encouraging those
interested to click on
www.daltonstate.edu/cce/travel to "vote" for a
future destination.

What they’ll see and do once they get there includes exploring the
sites of London: Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, and Big Ben,
to name a few. But they’ll also travel through the beautiful rolling
hills of Scotland and Wales, visiting Edinburgh, the Lake District
in Wales, and Stratford-upon-Avon along the way.
DSC Destinations, the new travel learning initiative developed by
the College, will be sponsoring several similar trips over the
coming year, including New England: Islands and Mountains, from
September 14-23; Quebec Holiday, from December 11 -17; and next
spring’s Reflections of Italy, March 24 – April 2, 2009.
In partnership with Collette Vacations, Dalton State staffers Carol
Burton and Courtney Yarbrough, Personal Growth and Enrichment
Coordinator, will accompany travelers who sign up through DSC
Destinations along one of these “incredible journeys.”
One of the plusses of these travel learning trips, says Yarbrough,
is that the Center for Continuing Education coordinates other
enrichment classes to complement the trips.
“The additional classes are an added benefit,” she says, noting that
during the months prior to the “British Landscapes” trip, paid
participants could attend such CE classes as “An Evening with
Shakespeare” and “Travel Photography,” free of charge. They also had
the chance to attend a power-point presentation featuring “Castles
and Cathedrals,” and were invited to read and discuss The Other
Boleyn Girl, a selection of the Dalton Reads, Inc., book club.
“Our goal is to use the resources of the College to enhance and
support the travel programs we offer, thus making them richer
experiences for our participants,” says Pam Partain, Director of
Continuing Education.
“Our first attempt has been very successful, and we hope to offer
classes designed to enhance future trips in the years to come.”
While trips have been planned through next spring, with an average
of three per year, members of the CE staff say they are very
interested in discovering where future travelers have a desire to
go.
“On our website, we welcome feedback because we want to plan our
future destinations around the places that people from our area want
to travel,” Yarbrough says. She adds that by clicking on
www.daltonstate.edu/cce/travel, one can “vote” for a future
destination.
“This will not only help us decide where the next trips need to be,
but it will also enable us to fashion continuing educational
programming around those future trips,” says Partain.
