Dalton State College recently inducted eighteen students into Sigma
Beta Delta International Honor Society chapter during a ceremony at
The James E. Brown Center. Dr. John O. Schwenn, President of Dalton
State College, delivered the keynote address.
Sigma Beta Delta, a business honor society for institutions with
regional accreditation, has more than 34,000 members in 250 chapters
located in 46 states and on two continents. The Dalton State chapter
was formally installed in February 2007, and its first members were
inducted that spring.
“The purpose of Sigma Beta Delta is to encourage and recognize
scholarship and accomplishment among business students and to
encourage and promote aspirations toward personal and professional
development,” says Dr. Donna Mayo, Dean of the School of Business
for the College and an honorary member of the College’s chapter.
In order to be inducted into Sigma Beta Delta, a student must be a
junior or senior enrolled in a Business Administration bachelor’s
degree program and must rank in the upper 20 percent of their class
at the time of invitation to membership.
Chapter members are inducted into membership following completion of
at least one-half of the degree program in which they are enrolled.
Those programs include the Bachelor of Business Administration
degree programs in Accounting, Management, Management Information
Systems, Marketing Systems, or Operations Management and the
Bachelor of Applied Science in Technology Management.
“This is an excellent group of business students, and we are
delighted to welcome them into this honorary society,” Mayo says.
“Having an organization of this type provides our faculty with the
opportunity to confer international recognition on our students for
their outstanding academic achievements in the school of business.”
In addition to the students, two faculty members were inducted into
Sigma Beta Delta as honorary members including Dr. Mike D’Itri,
Associate Professor of Operations Management and Ms. Laura Rose,
Associate Professor of Accounting. Chapter Faculty Officers include
Dr. Marilyn Helms, President; Dr. Harold Jones, Vice President; and
Dr. Larry Johnson, Secretary/Treasurer.
