Spanish Language Students Produce Original Play on Cervantes Novel

During spring semester, students in Dr. Nancy Mason’s Spanish 2002 class wrote and produced an original play based on the exemplary novel, La Gitanilla (The Little Gypsy) by Miguel de Cervantes. Consisting of seven scenes narrated by Maria Guijon, the play told the story of a beautiful young gypsy girl (Kim Shaw) and the young Spanish nobleman (Ibrahim Awad) who wanted to marry her. Sydney Holloway accompanied the players with gypsy music on the guitar, and prior to the production Maria Guijon provided a Power Point presentation about the lives and culture of Spanish gypsies.

Pictured are, from left: Toria Roberts (el Jefe de los Gitanos, king of the gypsies), Marcia Batchelor (la Corregidora, mother of the gypsy girl), Jessica Ogle (jealous Carducha), Sidney Holloway (el Conde and soldier), Robert Odom (el Corregidor, father of the gypsy girl), Madison Powell (el Paje and soldier), Ibrahim Awad (el Galan, young Spanish nobleman) Kim Shaw (Preciosa, young gypsy girl), Maria Guijon (narrator), and Christy Ware (la Abuela, the grandmother).
