Cheryl Nuckolls, Administrative Assistant to the School of Nursing,
and
Kelley Mahoney, Associate Professor of English, recently received
high
honors from their peers and the DSC Foundation during Dalton State
College's 33rd Honors Convocation.
Nuckolls, an alumna of Dalton State as well as a 29-year employee of
the institution, was presented the Beth Burdick Service Excellence
Award, and Mahoney, who has taught for the College since 1991,
received
the DSC Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching.
"Cheryl Nuckolls is considered to be the 'go-to' authority for
each of
the 600 student advisees in the School of Nursing," commented
David
Elrod, Director of Institutional Advancement at the College who
presented Nuckolls with her award.
"Members of the nursing faculty say that they could not function
without her steady hand. She is recognized on campus and within the
community as being one of the essential ingredients for the nursing
program's success."
Vice-President for Academic Affairs John Hutcheson said that Kelley
Mahoney likewise possesses a remarkable affinity with students.
"Her teaching talents are among the best on the faculty," noted
Hutcheson, who presented Mahoney with her award. "Her student
evaluations are excellent. One of her students said that of all of
his
instructors, she is the one that he most did not want to
disappoint."
Nuckolls and Mahoney each received a check for $1,000 during the
ceremony.
Faculty and staff members were nominated by their peers in their
respective categories, and then selected by faculty and staff
committees which reviewed the nominees and their portfolios. The
committee that selects the winner of the DSC Foundation Award for
Excellence in Teaching is represented by students as well.
Both recipients expressed gratitude for the recognition.
Mahoney, who earned her bachelor's degree from Carson Newman
College
and her master's from University of Georgia, said she was pleased
to
be
considered for the honor given the "exceptional group of faculty
members" who were nominated this year.
"I felt honored just to be nominated, so to win the award was
truly a
blessing. I love to teach and love my content area, English, and I
try
to communicate that passion to my students."
Nuckolls echoed those sentiments. "It is a tremendous honor to be selected for the Beth Burdick
Service
Excellence Award", said Nuckolls. "Helping students achieve their
dreams is the true mission of Dalton State College. I have been blessed to
be
a small part of that for 29 years."
