| It may look empty in these photographs, but the College’s new Learning Commons should be brimming with students by the beginning of Fall Semester.
Library Director Tracey Mendoza thinks it’s going to be the “hottest spot on campus.” Located in the Derrell C. Roberts Library, the Learning Commons will provide a dedicated space for students to access wireless technology and to “network” with each other.
“The Learning Commons will provide a space for students to work either in groups or alone with all of the latest technology at their fingertips,” says Jodi Johnson, Vice President for Enrollment and Student Services. “The space will allow students to work in clusters around computer pods or to study in small groups in comfy chairs in the lounge.”

The Learning Commons is located on the northwest side of the library in what was the Library Conference Center. This summer, the center was reconfigured to accommodate new furniture, including computer stations.
A small studio with equipment for practicing speeches and presentations is a unique feature of the Commons, says Johnson, noting that students can practice their presentation skills using audio-visual equipment.
“The lounge area will provide another place on campus where students can congregate besides the Student Center,” Johnson says.

While it may be true that there is “no free lunch,” students will be able to take advantage of the “free” coffee and hot chocolate machine in the Common’s kitchen area, which also includes a microwave.

And students can also take advantage of “free” printing by using one of the dedicated student computers in the Commons.
A research librarian and a computer technician will be on hand to answer students’ questions during operating hours, which are
8:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. and Sunday afternoons.
“The Roberts Library staff is extremely excited to see how quickly the Learning Commons and the ‘wireless cafe’ become popular with our students,” Mendoza says. “This facility is refocusing on our students. With its reserved workstations, practice studio, and wireless lounge, we’re hoping that students will see this as a great service where they will have access to reference and technical assistance.”
And, she adds, “It’s a given that free coffee and free printing make a sweet deal even sweeter!”
