Dalton State College alumnus U.S.
Navy Commander Gregory E. McRae will return to Dalton State College
on Tuesday, November 11, to celebrate Veterans Day with a
presentation at 10:00 a.m. in Goodroe Auditorium entitled “Honoring
Those Who Serve.”
A native of Dalton, Commander McRae was commissioned through the
Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate Program in September 1993.
Following nuclear power and basic submarine training, he served as
Damage Control Assistant and Assistant Engineer on the USS
TENNESSEE, a ballistic missile submarine.
In April 2004, he reported to Navy Personnel Command in Millington,
Tennessee, as Assistant Branch Head for Enlisted Submarine/Nuclear
Power Assignments where he supervised 28 detailers in the assignment
and distribution of over 28,000 sailors. During this tour, he
completed an Individual Augmentee assignment to Guantanamo Bay,
Cuba, where he assisted in the conduct of over 60 Military Tribunals
and Administrative Review Boards for detainees captured during the
Global War on Terror.
Following graduation from the Submarine Command Course in May of
2006, he reported for duty as Executive Officer on another ballistic
missile submarine, the USS LOUISIANA. During his tour, the ship
earned the 2006 Omaha Trophy for Strategic Excellence and the 2007
Battle Efficiency ‘E’. In April 2007, he was reassigned to the
ballistic missile submarine USS HENRY M. JACKSON as Executive
Officer where he successfully guided a new crew through its first
Pre-deployment Training Period in over 3 years following a refueling
overhaul. |

In January 2008, he was
assigned to Submarine Squadron SEVENTEEN where he served as
Officer-in-Charge of the Strategic Readiness & Reliability Review, a
comprehensive analysis of the Navy’s strategic nuclear program. He
is currently attending the U. S. Army War College in Carlisle,
Pennsylvania, where he is pursuing a Master’s degree in Strategic
Studies.
CDR McRae’s personal awards include the Navy Commendation Medal (six
awards), Joint Service Achievement Medal, and the Navy Achievement
Medal (four awards), as well as many campaign and unit awards. He
is married to the former Kimberly Cook of Calhoun, Georgia, and has
two children, Zach and Katie.
