Becky Dearing is
like many students who decided to go back to school after
landing a job she loves.
As an Accounting Supervisor for the Chattanooga Times Free
Press, Dearing is proud to work for a “wonderful company,” and
enjoys being part of what she considers to be an exciting
industry. But she hopes to take her career to the next step.
“I love what I’m doing now,” says Dearing, who plans to continue
to work in the newspaper field indefinitely.
“My job requires good judgment, a good work ethic, and good
accounting skills. And with this bachelor’s degree in
accounting, I hope to achieve an even greater level of knowledge
in my profession that will enable me to add more value to our
team and improve my earning potential.” |

Dearing attended East
Ridge High School and earned an associate degree in accounting
from an area technical college. But once she learned that Dalton
State had begun offering a bachelor’s degree in the field, she
jumped at the chance to earn a four-year degree.
“It’s been a very positive experience,” she says, adding that
she began her studies this fall. “The staff and instructors are
all very helpful, professional, and knowledgeable. Dalton State
offers a superior education for a school this size.”
In addition to the HOPE Scholarship, Dearing has received two
other scholarships: one from the Chattanooga Chapter of the
American Society of Women Accountants and the other from the
Educational Foundation for Women in Accounting.
“I am a member of the Chattanooga Chapter of the ASWA, but I did
not know I was going to be awarded the scholarship,” she
recalls. “My fellow members surprised me and presented it to me
at our annual public relations luncheon. It was quite an honor.”
The second scholarship is a four-year scholarship from the EFWA.
“They award a number of scholarships annually, primarily for
women seeking an education in the profession based on a range of
criteria. I was awarded the Women in Transition Scholarship for
women seeking a degree in accounting who have been divorced or
widowed within the previous year.”
At 33, Dearing is the mother of a 15-year-old son, Justin, whom
she considers her “best friend.” She and Justin often take their
two dachshunds, Twinkie and Brownie, to the “doggie park” after
work and on the weekends.
A snow-skiing enthusiast, Dearing is looking forward to the
College-sponsored ski trip to Breckenridge, Colorado.
“I was thrilled to learn that the Student Activities Department
at Dalton State was sponsoring this trip in December. I’m
excited to be going with them.”
Dearing feels committed to the path she’s chosen and is looking
forward to the opportunities to come. She encourages potential
students to pursue, and commit to, their dreams.
“On my scholarship application, I included a variation of my
favorite quote by Peter Drucker. He said, ‘Until there is
commitment, there are only dreams, hopes, and promises, but no
real goals or plans.’ I believe that, too.”
