One thing that
Patty Black, 19, has learned since she came to Dalton State is
“not to waste time.”
“Time management is a key factor to success,” says Black, a
native of Ringgold who is a pre-pharmacy major.
“College is not at all like high school,” she says, explaining
that in high school teachers often required smaller assignments
as daily grades and would give tests that only covered a chapter
at a time.
“In biology, we’ll go over three or more chapters and then have
a huge test. So you really have to study the material you’ve
covered in class after you talk about each chapter.”
In her Freshman Year Experience (FYE) class last fall, Black and
her classmates talked about time management techniques, learned
tips for success, and listened to outside speakers, all designed
to enhance the college learning experience.
But even with those study skills in place, Black admits that
college is hard work.
“The classes have been really hard, and I’ve had to put a lot of
my time into studying,” she says. “It’s not like high school
where you have lots of small assignments. You’re more on your
own to learn the material.
“But I’ve also found that the professors here want you to do
well. They have all been very helpful and willing to stay after
class when you have questions. It’s like they really want you to
succeed.” |

This summer, Black will
take Chemistry I and Chemistry II so that she can take Organic
Chemistry and other math and science requirements beginning next
fall.
“I figured I’d get these two out of the way this summer because
with chemistry you have to spend a lot of time in labs. It will
make it easier for me to make my class schedule work next year
to have already completed these.”
Black looks forward to finishing her degree, probably at Mercer,
over the next few years and becoming a pharmacist, a career she
believes will have flexible hours, competitive pay, and
excellent benefits.
“I’ve always been good in math and science, so I think I’ll
enjoy working in this field.”
