Jenna Caylor breezed through high school, rarely cracking a book or
studying for a test.
But the admittedly bright student failed to graduate from high
school, dropping out during her senior year. After a brief educational
hiatus, she pursued her General Educational Development (GED) diploma
and then enrolled at Dalton State.
Now Caylor is, at 22, chapter President of Phi Theta Kappa, the
College’s honor society, and having the time of her life.
“I have had to study a lot,” says Jenna, a 4.0 GPA student who
insists that Dalton State is “harder than most of the large
universities in the state.
“But I have been very impressed with the faculty here. My
professors have been outstanding. Their office doors are always open,
and they have been very helpful.”
Caylor didn’t hesitate to become involved in the life of the campus
and beyond when she arrived. As President of PTK, she was invited to
attend an international conference on pop culture at the University of
Nevada at Las Vegas last year and to participate in a regional
leadership conference in Jackson, Mississippi in August.
“It’s been an incredible experience to travel on these PTK trips
and to meet other honor students from all across the country,” she
says, noting that she hopes to be able to attend the PTK Conference in
Seattle in April.
In addition to her work with the honor society, Caylor helped
charter the Circle K Club on campus and is serving as its Vice
President.
In her Circle K role, she aided the Kiwanis Club of Dalton by
volunteering as a server during the club’s annual Pancake Day
fundraiser in November. She has also worked to increase Circle K
membership and is participating in volunteer work to benefit the
American Cancer Society.
Her activities extend beyond the campus as well. Caylor is
working as an intern for Mohawk Industries 20 hours per week in the
compensation department of Mohawk’s Human Resources Department.
“I’m very interested in human resources and in working with people
in that capacity,” she says. “I could see myself staying in that field
after I graduate.”
Caylor expects to graduate with a degree in Business Administration
in the summer of 2007. In the meantime, she’s either “studying,
working, reading, or watching movies.” And that’s just a start.
