The newlyweds remember their first date as being more than
memorable.
When Julie Morrow and Dustin Day grabbed a hamburger at
McDonalds between classes in the spring of 2005, what stands out
in their minds was how Dustin spilled a Dr. Pepper all over the
inside of his truck.
“The lid wasn’t on right,” recalls Dustin.
“It was really terrible,” says Julie. “He thought he’d ruined
it.” |

But the students, both Business Administration majors, decided
to chance another date, and before long they were a couple.
Julie and Dustin married in June of 2006.
The Days actually met in the fall of 2004 when they were
students in Ms. Valerie Cutrale’s Principles of Marketing class,
where Dustin sat directly behind his future bride.
It was during the second semester of that year that the two had
their first date while enrolled in classes in their field of
study: Human Resource Management, taught by Dr. Don Bowen, and
Business Writing, taught by Dr. Wes Davis.
And during the fall of 2005, while enrolled in Dr. Marilyn
Helms’ Principles of Operations Management class, the two became
engaged.
“What’s really interesting about our meeting each other the way
we did is that everybody in my family knew members of Dustin’s
family before I’d ever met him,” says Julie, a native of
Ellijay, Georgia, who graduated from Gilmer County High School
in 2001.
“Julie’s church choir had actually performed at my church in
Polk County,” says Dustin, a native of Cleveland, Tennessee.
“So I had met her parents a few times before I ever met her.”
What the two also had in common was a farming background.
Dustin’s family owns a poultry and beef cattle farm in Cleveland
and Julie grew up on a poultry and cattle farm in Ellijay.
Dustin actually turned down a scholarship to study Agricultural
Engineering at Auburn to attend Dalton State.
“Part of the reason I chose to come here is that I wanted to
keep working on my family’s farm,” he says, noting that he
spends most days tending to the livestock, baling hay, and
several evenings taking classes at Dalton State.
And Julie, who works full-time for Shaw Industries as a Claims
Analyst, says she’s more than happy to help out with farm duties
in her spare time.
“When I’m at home, I’m helping him,” she says.
In their free time, Dustin and Julie volunteer in the church
where they married, Ball Play Baptist, as assistant youth
directors. Julie also serves as the assistant pianist while
Dustin occasionally plays the drums for services.
Both expect to graduate within the next year, and Julie has
dreams of pursuing a Master’s in Business Administration.
Just four months into married life, Julie and Dustin have
developed a sense of humor about their “first date” and their
somewhat similar honeymoon experience.
“We were headed down to St. Augustine on our honeymoon and we
blew out a tire on the way down,” says Dustin. “We thought about
turning back, but kept right on going.” |
