About

1098-T

The Internal Revenue Service requires that Dalton State College report, on a 1098-T form, payments for qualified tuition and related expenses (required fees). In addition, the amount of scholarships and grants is also reported. 1098-Ts will be available after Jan. 31, 2024.

The 1098-T is an information return. Its purpose is to assist you in computing certain education tax credits or deductions for which you may be eligible. For tax information, please visit the IRS website - www.irs.gov. Publication 970 provides detailed information about tax benefits for education.

Payments for tuition and fees processed to the student's account during the calendar year (January 1 - December 31) are included in box 1 of the 1098-T. In previous years, the 1098-T sent provided a figure in Box 2 of the form that represented the qualified tuition and related expenses (QTRE) that were charged to the student’s account for the calendar year (January 1 - December 31). Due to a change to institutional reporting requirements mandated by federal law, beginning with tax year 2018, the amount of QTRE paid during the calendar year will be reported in Box 1.

Scholarships and grants credited to the student's account during the calendar year (January 1 - December 31) are included in box 5 of the 1098-T. We have no control as to when scholarships and grants are entered to the students' accounts.

The amounts in each box do not necessarily relate to a term or semester. They are determined by the date they appear on the student's account.

Please note: Payments received after Dec. 31, 2023, will be reported on the 2024 1098-T form.

1098-T forms for 2023 were mailed to the student's permanent address. We are not required to produce forms or report to the IRS if the amount in box 5 (scholarships/grants) is greater than the amount in box 1 (payments for qualified tuition and related expenses).

We cannot provide tax advice or provide information beyond what is presented here concerning the 1098-T or tax credits, etc. Please review Publication 970 or consult with your tax advisor for information about education related tax issues.
