Biography

Prior to coming to Dalton State College, I served as a Crop Protection Specialist for the Kansas Agricultural Extension Service, worked for Ag-Vantage Div. of Chemlawn Corporation, taught high school science, and served as a Research Horticulturist with the United States Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Research Service.  While working on a B.S. degree at Purdue University, I had the opportunity to work in Dr. Tom Turpin’s lab on research projects involving control of corn rootworm beetles and cutworms. While working for the Kansas Agricultural Extension Service I surveyed populations of European corn borer and sorghum aphids. My master’s degree research involved studying the anatomy of plant tissue cultures, embryogenesis, and laticifer development in milkweed species using fluorescence microscopy, immunological staining, and transmission electron microscopy.   While working on my Ph.D., I worked on projects involving plant tissue culture of geranium and melon, protoplast culture of geranium, and developed and utilized an in vitro disease screening method for bacterial blight of geranium. My work with the USDA, ARS involved developing and utilizing virus elimination protocols for wild peanut species, developing and utilizing an in vitro technique for germplasm recovery from non-viable wild peanut seeds, and collaborating on the development of a protoplast regeneration technique for a wild peanut species.
