Engaging the Community in the Life of Dalton State
I have been looking forward to my first fall season in Dalton since I learned I would be here through the 2015-2016 academic year. I have heard the ridge behind campus is glorious in fall color, and I can already smell the fresh earth and feel the crisp autumn air as I anticipate a hike on our campus trails. If you haven’t already done so, I invite you to come walk our network system of four interconnected trails. Just a few minutes on the trail and you will feel as if you are deep in the North Georgia mountains.
There are a number of stimulating activities planned this fall, and we would welcome your participation at any or all of them. On Monday, September 21, we will host an evening of music, “Dalton State of Mind” celebration concert at the Burran Bell Tower quad at 7 pm. Bring your lawn chairs and join us for what promises to be a fabulous evening of music that celebrates the launch of our music degree program.
Monday’s is the first of several free concerts scheduled for Dalton State this semester. Others include: Adrin Akins, a countertenor, on Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Goodroe Auditorium in Gignilliat Memorial Hall; The L’Abri String Ensemble on Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Goodroe Auditorium; a sacred harp singing on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m.at Goodroe Auditorium; The Dalton-Whitfield Community Band on Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. at Northwest Whitfield High School; and the Dalton State Singers on Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Goodroe Auditorium.
The Department of Social Work is leading discussions along with their Social Welfare Film Series. There will be three documentaries screened on campus this fall designed to prompt a dialog between students majoring in different fields, faculty, community members, and professionals in the social work field. “Tough Love,” a PBS Point of View Documentary, will be shown Sept. 24; “Hidden Pictures” will be screened on Oct. 15; and “The Waiting Room” is scheduled for Nov. 17. All will be screened at 6 p.m. in Goodroe Auditorium in Gignilliat Memorial Hall. These films are free and open to the public, and are rated PG-13. Panel discussions and conversations engaging the audience will be held after each film.
Mark your calendar now for our fall theatrical performance of “The White Rose” which will be in production in Goodroe Auditorium in Gignilliat Memorial Hall Nov. 11-14. The play is set in 1943 Nazi Germany and tells the story of Hans and Sophie Scholl and the resistance movement within the Hitler Youth.
If you are looking for athletic events, you don’t need to go farther than your own back yard. With men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s soccer and women’s volleyball all competing this fall, there are several good options every week. Please visit our Athletics website for all of the schedules: dsroadrunners.com. And stay tuned for the men’s basketball schedule which will be available later this fall!
Of course there are many other activities happening on campus every day of the week, but these are some of the ones I think the community might enjoy. You are always welcome to visit campus to see how we continue to grow and improve.
