Scholarship Established for Beloved Professor

12/06/17

David Elrod, director of the Dalton State Foundation, receives a gift from Mary and Sam Barton, parents of the late Dr. Kris Barton, for the establishment of the Kristin M. Barton Memorial Scholarship in Communication at Dalton State College. Barton’s maternal grandmother, Bertha Sandrick, also contributed to the endowment. Barton, a rising star at Dalton State and past recipient of the Foundation’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, died suddenly in his sleep a year and a half ago. At the time, an upper level communication class was working with him to create The Dalton State Trivia Book to coincide with the College’s 50th anniversary celebration. The book was published this fall; proceeds from the sale of the book benefit the scholarship fund.

“In this the College’s 50th anniversary year, the tradition of scholarship opportunities for hardworking and deserving students continues with new opportunities like the Barton Scholarship that Kris’s parents and grandmother have provided for our students,” Elrod said. “We are honored by their vision and philanthropy in support of our students.”
