Radiologic Technology Program Mourns Loss

It’s not always easy to remember what angles and positions to use while taking an X-ray. Cindy Fisher knew that and came up with fun, different ways for her students to remember.
“She loved teaching, and it was evident that she loved helping us learn,” said Kelsey McNamara, a radiologic technology student in her second year at Dalton State.
Fisher, the clinical coordinator and lecturer in radiologic technology, passed away Friday. Fisher was also a 1997 graduate of the radiologic technology program, which was then based at Hamilton Medical Center, before becoming part of the College the following year. She has been teaching at Dalton State since 2007.
“She and I split the curriculum,” said Dr. Susan West, chair of the Department of Allied Health and a professor of radiologic technology. “She was a great professional in our field, and she loved teaching. She loved teaching students how to be a radiologic technologist and how to be a professional more than anyone I’ve ever known.”
Fisher made such an impact on the local community and her students at Dalton State, many people gathered on campus in the Health Professionals Building to remember her on Monday, West said.
“We’re like family here,” she said. “It’s not like they take one class from us and leave. They have Cindy and me every day. She was so special here. Her love for radiology and her students was so obvious. She’ll be missed.”
McNamara said she’s thankful to have been part of the Dalton State radiological technology family while Fisher was teaching. She and her classmates have grown close to their faculty members.
“We do everything together,” she said. “We go eat together, had Thanksgiving together last year, and we had plans to go to a pumpkin patch with Cindy this week.”
Fisher went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Covenant College in organizational leadership and had plans to begin her master’s program soon, West said.
“Cindy Fisher was always someone who had a smile on her face and a kind word for me,” said President Dr. Margaret Venable. “As a relative newcomer to the campus, her hospitality was much appreciated. I can only imagine how her family, colleagues, and students must feel to lose such a special person.”
Fisher leaves behind a husband, Greg, and a son, Jacob. The funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Thursday at Heritage Funeral Home in Fort Oglethorpe. Visitation is scheduled Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and again from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour on Thursday.
