Piano and Winds Concert Planned at Dalton State

02/20/17

Barely a decade apart, two of the most well known composers of traditional classical music not only composed quintets for piano and wind, but in the same key.

At the time Mozart composed Quintet in E-flat in 1784, no such piece for that combination of winds and piano existed. In 1796, Beethoven composed a similar Quintet for Piano and Winds.

Those pieces will be the focus of the Expedition Chamber Winds concert on Wednesday, March 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Goodroe Auditorium at Dalton State.

In 2014 after finding each other in an opera orchestra and realizing that their sounds blended beautifully, Expedition Chamber Winds was founded. Members of Expedition Chamber Winds are: oboist Allison Robinson, John Reams on clarinet, Ellie Jenkins playing horn, and Evan Ledford on the bassoon. Featured in this concert is Jerico Valequez on piano.

“It’s a rare opportunity to hear these two landmarks of the classical era performed together,” said Jenkins, associate professor of music who organizes the concert series.

This performance is free and open to the public. It is made possible by a grant from the Dalton State Foundation to the School of Liberal Arts.
