03/23/17

Deshawn Ruffin is a standout student on and off the basketball court.

The Dalton State junior business management major from Jacksonville, Fla. was recently honored for his academic achievements as a student athlete.

Ruffin was named a 2016-2017 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete by the NAIA. To be nominated an athlete must maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale and must be at least a junior.

Ruffin has averaged 4.2 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game during his career with the Roadrunners. Coaches note that he is a natural leader for the team both in academics and as a player.

Ruffin said he takes pride in being a good example to his four siblings, all younger.

“I want my siblings to be better than me when they grow up,” he said.

Along with maintaining a high GPA, Ruffin serves as president of the SSAC student leadership council and holds a seat on the NAIA student leadership council.
