Dalton State Hosts Panel on Underage Drinking

12/04/19

Dalton State will soon host a panel exploring underage drinking, efforts to prevent it, and the damage to communities it can cause.

The panel discussion will be Dec. 14 at 11 a.m. at the Mack Gaston Community Center in Dalton. It is a part of the Communities Talk program by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The program encourages and supplies resources for town hall meetings focused on preventing underage drinking across the country.

Dalton State College’s Counseling Center is sponsoring the event, and members of the counseling department will speak. Other speakers include local law enforcement, mental health providers and community members.

Topics include the dangers of underage drinking, as well as ways that parents can begin conversations with their children about drinking. The panel will also review what resources are available to members of the community.

“Our goal is to share information,” said Jenny Guy, associate director of counseling at the college. “This is an effort to educate and show people where they can find supportive resources.”
